Newark—Gary Lee Sergent, 69, died Tuesday (April 26, 2016) at his home

Friends may call from 2 – 5 P.M. on Sunday (May 1st ) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday (May 2nd) at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery. Immediately following, friends many join the family for a reception at St. Michael’s Church Hall, South Main Street. Newark.

Memorials, in his memory, may be made to a Life Time Care, 1000 West Miller Street, Newark, New York 14513 or to St. Michael Church, 401 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.

Mr. Sergent was born October 3, 1946 in Clifton Springs, the son of Martin and Ruth Anna Dreffine Sergent. He had attended Newark High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War. where he earned his GED. Gary had worked at Xerox for a time and for 30 years as senior systems designer and sales rep. for Krapf Business Systems/Magnatag Products. In his retirement, he did maintenance and limo driving at Ashton Place Senior Living in Clifton Springs where he was very well liked by the staff and residents. He had been active with the Clifton Springs Jaycees and the New York Jaycees Association where he was chairman of the family life development program. Gary was a girl scout leader while his daughters were in scouting, at the time the only male leader in the area. June 20, 1987, he married the love of his life and soul-mate Micky. They enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and woodworking. Making signs and birdhouses were their specialties. At St. Michael’s Church, Gary volunteered for many projects, the rummage sales, the apple pie baking, the summer festival and making and selling his wares in the Woodcraft Shop at the Christmas Bazaars and anywhere else that was needed. He always made special effort to attend his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He was a huge fan of the Newark Pilots baseball league and enjoyed going to their games. Gary also loved playing NYS lottery. He was the son of a military man and spent many years in the Virginia Beach area. He developed a love for the beach, hence many vacation were spent at Myrtle Beach. He was a member of the August Mauer Post, American Legion Gary was always known in the community to lend a helping hand and was a friend to everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Michaela “Micky” Wasson Sergent; children Amy (Andrew) Pieters, Kimbery (Douglas) Groover, Kari Sergent, Erin (Brice) Fisher and step-son Scott (Charlie Ann Camp) Bridger; grandchildren Adam, Kaydee, Nathan, Kaitlyn, Jenna, Hannah, Zoe, Benjamin, Oakley, Hayden and Breanna all of Newark; a sister Joan Faye Sergent a resident of the Wayne County Nursing Home. Gary was predeceased byhis father Martin and mother Ruth Anna, his brothers Donald, Robert and David Sergent.
