Margaret Jane “Peg” Durfee

Newark—Margaret “Peg” Durfee, 89, died Saturday (August 29, 2015) at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

Friends may call from on Tuesday (September 1st) from 2-4 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will follow the calling hours at 4 P.M. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.

Memorials, in her name, may be made to St. Mark's Episopal Church, 400 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.

Mrs. Durfee was born on June 28, 1926 in Newark, the daughter of the late Edward and Julia Martens Verdehem. She graduated from Newark High School in the Class of 1944. Peg, in her early years, worked at Bloomer Brothers and Eastman Kodak. Then for twenty-five years, she was a teller for Lincoln First Bank in Newark, retiring in 1982. Peg was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and enjoyed her church family. She cherished her farm house and tending their farm for over 50 years. Peg was a member of the Newark Elk's Auxiliary where she volunteered many hours, helping serve at banquets and parties. She also volunteered many hours at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and Newark Food Closet. On election days, Peg worked for the Board of Election at the polling places. She loved traveling with her husband in their retirement, doing arts and crafts, crocheting and knitting.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Jill Durfee of Newark; two grandchildren Gina Durfee and Tommy Caralla III; three great grandchildren Belle Rose Bouwens, Mya and Kaleb Caralla; a sister Alice Munkhoff of Coca, Fl.; several nieces and nephews. Peg was predeceased by her husband of 58 years Nelson in 2004, two sisters Dorothy McIntyre and Betty Hutchinson.
